Summary
This is an abstract from the "Technology in Terrestrial and Underwater Archaeology" session, at the 2019 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
Since 1996, University of West Florida (UWF) archaeologists have documented the vessels associated with Tristán de Luna y Arellano’s 1559 colonization fleet through standard survey methods. In recent years, with the relative low cost of underwater digital cameras, UWF documentation methods have evolved to include photographs and video of excavation units. This allows archaeologists to compare digital images with diver created illustrations. Further technological advances, such as computer-vision photogrammetric software, permit archaeologists to preserve minute details of archaeological sites. This paper presents the development of digital documentation methods utilized by UWF archaeologists on the Emanuel Point Shipwrecks. It emphasizes the importance of 3d photogrammetric modeling to site analysis and public interpretation.
