Summary

This is an abstract from the "Current Research in Maritime Archaeology" session, at the 2019 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Recent remote sensing surveys of the seabed conducted by the University of Malta continue to expand our knowledge on the underwater archaeology of the Maltese Islands. The primary objective of these surveys is to map Malta’s underwater cultural assets so as these may be protected and managed according to local laws and international conventions. These surveys  are  enabling the study of the islands’ maritime history. Chronologically, this talk covers the late 18th to early 20th centuries - a period that is well documented and published period by historians). Historical archaeology in the context of the Maltese Islands on the other hand, remains relatively unexplored. This paper presents preliminary findings in the form of a number of interesting shipwrecks from Malta’s recent past. Results that in turn provide a novel perspective for the study of trade and exchange in objects that formed an integral part of social life during these centuries.
