Report on the Status of Lake Champlain Maritime Musem's New Digital Mapping Project
Author(s): Patricia N. Reid
Year: 2019
Summary
This is an abstract from the "Technology in Terrestrial and Underwater Archaeology" session, at the 2019 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
This presentation is a report on the status of the Digital Mapping Project, a new initiative of Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. LCMM is producing a GIS-based interactive map of the Champlain Valley with layers showing archaeological and social history of the region over time. We aim to aggregate our archival and archaeological materials with our interpretative content in a digital format through both a master ArcGIS map (intended for research use) and several narrative StoryMaps, a beta product of ArcGIS that serves well as a platform for digital exhibits. Additionally, we are submitting this digital metadata to the State Historic Preservation Offices of Vermont and New York in a collaborative effort to add to their archaeological inventories of underwater sites. In 2018, LCMM initiated a summer fellowship program which allowed us to map South Lake Champlain and develop several associated StoryMaps. This important work will continue in 2019 and beyond.
