Trenches to Rafters: The Archaeology and Architecture of Francois Valle II's Ste. Genevieve Home

Summary

This is an abstract from the "POSTER Session 3: Material Culture and Site Studies" session, at the 2019 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

This poster details the history of a previously unexamined French Colonial poteaux sur sol structure in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. Contrary to local oral histories, archaeological evidence from the Sangamo Archeological Center’s 2017 and 2018 excavations indicate that this building was once much grander than the now-modest structure that still stands in the heart of the town. Beneath multiple layers of modern living lies an untouched example of French creole building patterns that characterize this region. This architectural assessment compliments what was found beneath the surface to better narrate the life and history of one of the town’s most prominent 18th century families during the time when America was still growing into its new boundaries.
