An Archaeological and Historical Report on Jackson Blue Springs and Merritt's Millpond, Jackson County, Florida

Summary

What Blue Springs County Park lacks in size, it makes up for in cultural resources, both in terms

of density and variety. For example, three archaeological sites were recorded within the park at

the time of state acquisition. While the CARL Archaeological Survey intended to do a typical

reconnaissance survey there, we ended up doing mostly gratis mitigation work to help Jackson

County save money. Consequently, much work still needs to be done to get a better and clearer

understanding of the park's historical resources. One thing we did not accomplish was to compare

sites in the park with specific soil types and natural communities. The reason we could not meet

this goal is that data on soils and original natural comminutes have yet to be digitized. We already

know, nonetheless, that the entire tract is rich with significant sites. All test pits placed on the

property thus far have produced historical resources of some sort. Unfortunately, some previous

land uses of the property, particularly some of the contouring that occurred closest to the spring,

have altered the area's archaeological integrity, although much of the tract bears only minor

scarring.
