Nellis Air Force Base Evaluation and Monitoring Plan for Wooden Culverts on the Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad Grade

Part of the Nellis Air Force Base (DRAFT) project

Year: 2010

Summary

The remains of the original 190-mile Las Vegas and Tonopah historic railroad alignment begin north of Las Vegas and end in Goldfield. The rail service began in downtown Las Vegas. From that point, an approximate 20 miles have been removed or disturbed through urbanization. Of the remaining 170 miles, an 18.5-mile portion is managed by Nellis Air Force Base (NAFB). An inventory of this portion of the grade was conducted in 2009. The hardware was removed more than 90 years ago and a degree of off-road driving combined with flash floods has resulted in a lack of overall physical integrity. Archaeologists noted 19 wooden culverts had been constructed within the grade or berm on the NAFB-managed portion. This is the first portion in which wooden culverts have been comparatively evaluated.
