Seismic Exploration Lines Near the Spring Mountains Clark County, Nevada

Summary

Northland Anthropological Research, Inc. (NAR), conducted an archaeological survey of five seismic exploration lines sited by Grant Geophysical Company on the northern slopes of the Spring Mountains in Clark County, Nevada. The survey was performed to insure that the proposed exploration activity would not adversely effect cultural resources. The lines, totalling 38.9 miles in length, were inspected between 3 and 11 January 1981. The survey recorded two archaeological sites, one representing a chipping station and the other a slightly more diverse lithic activity. Isolated artifacts were not encountered. Only one of the two sites has been judged significant by NAR personnel according to the criteria of 36 CFR 60. NAR recommends that geophone cables be hand-laid across this site, and that vehicular traffic be routed around the northwestern edge. If these site avoidance procedures are met, NAR recommends clearance for the proposed seismic exploration activity.
