Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Comparative Perspectives on European Colonization in the Americas: Papers in Honor of Réginald Auger" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
For my master’s degree, I worked on the Jacques Cartier Fort site. Later in my career, my work on fortifications became my doctoral project which is the study of French cities in the Americas. Defense structures were important to their conception and design. For my comprehensive exams, I examined the palisaded villages of the St. Lawrence Valley region. Since 2005, I have worked as an archaeologist for a consulting firm, where I direct CRM projects, primarily in the cities of Montréal and Québec and fortifications are part of my everyday work. In my presentation I will examine many fortified sites which Réginald Auger and I studied together. Ironically, the study of the walls which people used to enclose and protect themselves has permitted us to expand our study across the world.
