Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "East Carolina University Partnerships and Innovation with Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

ECU’s Program in Maritime Studies recently engaged in a partnership with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and their mission to recover lost service members from past wars. As part of that relationship, ECU hosted a two-year fellow, and took on several missions in both Europe and the Pacific. ECU ran their 2018 field school in Saipan as a DPAA mission which included over a dozen students and faculty in searching for lost WWII aircraft. This was immediately followed by a summer field season in 2018 and again in 2019 with Task Force Dagger Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports Special Forces Operators and their families. This paper outlines the DPAA missions to Saipan and results as well as some of the partnerships formed to support medically retired veterans looking for a new MISSION-PURPOSE-FOCUS.
