Summary
This is a paper/report submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
The State of Wisconsin has a Burial Sites Preservation Law where no human burial site, including cemeteries and Native American mound groups, may be disturbed without authorization from the director of the Wisconsin Historical Society. Requests to disturb within the boundaries of a burial site will often require additional research, especially in cases involving abandoned cemeteries. Abandoned cemeteries present a variety of challenges when searching for information regarding the chronology, legal boundaries and potential extent for human burials, affiliation, and the potential number of individuals buried there. This paper discusses those research challenges and different approaches to overcoming them, by examining physical and digital resources available, and examples of archival searches that were challenging and their outcomes.
