Summary
This is a poster submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
In the summer of 2019, the Department of Anthropology at the University of West Florida offered unique and dynamic field school experiences for undergraduate and graduate students. The department coordinated a historic terrestrial field school and a combined maritime and prehistoric terrestrial field school. The terrestrial field school is an annual ten-week project which conducts excavations at the Luna Settlement in Pensacola, Florida. The combined field school consists of five weeks of maritime research on shipwrecks in the Northwest Florida area and five weeks of terrestrial research at Butcherpen Mound in the Naval Live Oaks Nature Preserve. This poster will demonstrate the organization, benefits, and learning objectives of each field school project from a student perspective. This approach will highlight how the UWF archaeological field schools offer students with varying study interests the opportunity to obtain direct exposure to archaeological research to build upon the foundation of their future careers.
