Summary
This is a poster submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
This poster presents an overview of the Albania Ancient Shipwreck Project, funded by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA). In collaboration with RPM Nautical Foundation (RPM) and the Albanian National Agency of the Coastline, the Project has conducted two field seasons, assessing known shipwreck sites and surveying the coast for potential future excavation.
Spanning both the Ionian and Adriatic seas, the Albanian coast sits at an axis of colonization and maritime trade in the ancient world. Over the past decade, RPM has conducted the Illyrian Coastal Exploration Program, identifying several ancient shipwreck sites along the Albanian coast, but without the intention to conduct excavation. Thus, in 2018 the Project visited and assessed five shipwrecks previously discovered by RPM and in 2019 continued coastline survey. The Project has identified two shipwreck sites as excellent candidates for the first-ever underwater shipwreck excavation in Albania, which may commence as early as 2020.
