Return to Portland 2019: Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary Exploration with Deep Sea Technology and Telepresence

Summary

This is a paper/report submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

In the summer and fall of 2019, a team from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and staff from NOAA Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS) conducted an interdisciplinary exploration, survey, and telepresence outreach of biological and cultural sites within Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS). This first year of a multi-year project included archaeological and biological analyses of historic shipwrecks, such as the steamship Portland and coal schooners Frank A. Palmer and Louise B. Crary. It was determined that since nearly a decade had passed since any survey had been conducted, acquiring new information pertaining to site formation and general condition was warranted. Sites were surveyed using custom-made ROVs designed for collection of 4K motion video imagery plus 3D photogrammetry. Additionally, multi-beam surveys were undertaken to identify new cultural sites in SBNMS North East quadrant. This paper presents results from 2019 field research and goals for future investigations.
