Summary
This is a poster submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
Over the past few years Navy's approach to accounting for Navy aircraft losses has changed in order to better manage those resources. Where in the past the study and accounting of aircraft wrecks has been dealt with largely on a case by case bases, NHHC UA has now taken a more active role by conducting its own regional remote sensing surveys (the Regional Approach). Survey areas are selected based on locations where historically there have been several aircraft losses in close proximity to a base or training area. Unlike combat losses, most stateside losses were the result of extensive training, testing, and experimentation of new technology on aircraft. Many of these training losses remain missing. Locating, mapping, and surveying these losses will help UA, cultural resource managers on Navy bases, and stakeholders dealing with Naval aircraft sites better plan, manage, and preserve the memory of those pilots and their aircraft.
