Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Recent Development of Maritime and Historical Archaeology Programs in South Florida" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

The mission of the National Park Service (NPS) is to preserve and protect the natural and cultural resources of the NPS system for the betterment of this and future generations. Encompassing more than 1.7 million acres of land and water, Biscayne, Dry Tortugas, and Everglades National Parks form the newly unified South Florida National Park (SOFL) administrative unit and contains a diverse collection of cultural resources spanning human existence in the region- both above and below the water. Operationally, the ability to effectively administer the NPS mission, particularly for cultural resources, can be challenging and is often hindered by deficiencies in funding, staffing, resources, or competing/shifting management priorities. While challenged by operational constraints, the unique resources under the jurisdiction of the SOFL parks offer opportunity for training, education, and research for a variety of state, academic, and avocational programs that assist in the effective management of threatened cultural sites.
