Ethnohistoric Land Use Patterns: Elmendorf Air Force Base (Knik Arm) Area, Draft Report

Summary

This draft report provides a background paper contributing toward the long range planning for the management of cultural resources on Elmendorf Air Force Base. One goal is to address general prehistoric and historic land use patterns in this specific area; another is to provide a guide suggesting what to look for during a subsequent more comprehensive survey. This report reviews the context of the study, methods employed and innovated, literature reviewed, and introduces an Indian team organized to assist in the research and the plan. The Description of the 15 significant locations identified during the initial visual survey are presented in geographical order from south to north, focusing on beach and bluff areas along the eastern side of Knik Arm. Finally, the key findings to date are summarized, and some suggestions for the next steps are made.
