FRA Railroad Infrastructure Master Planning Considerations

Author(s): Mark Gordon

Year: 2005

Summary

The FRA railroad track system was originally constructed in the 1950's with 70 lb. track components, and the majority of the components used to construct the system were used parts obtained from the Copper river and Great Northwestern Railroad which operated between Cordova and Kennecott, Alaska, and which shut down operations in 1938. Most of these components are dated between 1907 and 1928. Some rail and hardware components were obtained from the Panama Canal Zone, and are dated between 1895 and 1897. After a condition assessment of the FRA railroad there have been several track systems that were closed due to track damage, failure, or simple lack of maintenance. This report details results of the conditions assessments with information explaining unoperational and operational parts of the rail system. This document also further explains a plan for removal of unoperational parts of the railroad.
