Hohokam Ballcourts and the Mesoamerican Connection
Author(s): David R. Wilcox; Charles Sternberg
Year: 1982
Summary
This report is a systematic, comparative study of Hohokam features inferred to be ballcourts. It is designed to contribute to our internationally renowned National Historic Landmark. The ballcourt hypothesis is carefully reassessed and supporting evidence is adduced. A model of the changing structure of the Hohokam regional system is derived from an analysis of the ballcourts and other data. The connections between the Southwest and Mesoamerica implied by the ballcourts are closely examined, and a new hypothesis of Southwest-Mesoamerican contact is presented. Three separate approaches to the Southwest-Mesoamerican connection are presented in Chapter 1. It is our goal to reconcile them.
