The Hatch Site: A Preliminary Report on an Assemblage of Cremation and Inhumation Burials from Northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico

Author(s): Jeff K. Romney

Year: 1994

Summary

The Hatch Site, is located on the property of Herman Hatch, just southwest of Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, along the Piedras Verdes River.

An apparent cemetery consisting of both cremation and inhumation burials is what presently constitutes the Hatch Site. The author is inclined to believe that the remains of a village are only a couple of hundred yards to the west and southwest of the cemetery. This belief is based on the information given to by the workmen who have plowed this area repeatedly and have noticed greatly compacted areas while plowing as if to hit walls of structures. A partial metate was retrieved from this general area during the digging of an irrigation canal control box.

There are no apparent lithic or ceramic surface scatters in either the cemetery or presumed village areas. There is no indication whatsoever that cultural remains are present. This is undoubtedly due to the decades of farming of these soils which has resulted in the obliteration of any surface features.
