Summary
At the request of Wil Chee Planning, Inc., who is under contract to the United States Army Engineer District, Honolulu, Pacific Legacy, Inc., conducted archaeological preconstruction reconnaissance subsurface testing and sampling for proposed housing facilities construction at Bellows Air Force Station (BAFS) Waimanalo, O'ahu Island, Hawai'i (Contract No. DACA83-96-D-0007, Delivery Order 0057). The purpose of the field investigations was to determine the presence or absence of archaeological resources within the proposed project area and if such resources would be impacted by the proposed project.
The surface survey determined that at least a portion of the project area has been previously disturbed by ground altering activities. No surface structures or features were present. A single basalt core was recovered on the surface along the edge of Family Circle Road. No other artifacts or surface cultural features were observed. The subsurface testing consisted of the excavation of 40 hand augured test units and two hand excavated test units. No charcoal or cultural material was observed in any of these units.
Based upon the result of the current study, no significant or potentially significant cultural remains are present within the proposed project area. In spite of this, the history of isolated cultural remains at BAFS cannot be ignored. It is possible that isolated archaeological deposits may be present within the project area. As a result, archaeological monitoring is recommended for all ground altering activities within the proposed project area.
