Summary

Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis investigative activities at thirteen areas at Bellows Air Force Station (BAFS) were monitored. These activities consisted of: [1] the removal of above-ground storage tanks, electrical transformers, and other materials; [2] the collection of sediment and ground-water samples; and [3] the clearance of vegetation, either by hand or machine.

Three historic sites are located in the project area. These are: [I] Site 50-80-15-383,a traditional Hawaiian pu'uhonua; [2] Site 50-80-15- 4850, which contains a cultural deposit of basalt flakes, buried A-horizons, and a crescent shaped pile of basalt cobbles, and [3] Site 50-80-15-4859, a complex of military structures. Site 383 is located on the top of Haununaniho Hill. Site 4850 is an irregularly shaped site extending from southeast of the Nike-Hercules missile facility, across and north of Inoa'ole Stream, and west around the base of Haununaniho Hill. Site 4859 encompasses the entire project area.

No intact surface or subsurface traditional Hawaiian cultural deposits were discovered in the areas sampled by this project.
