Report: Archaeological Investigations at Fort Point, St. Inigoes Maryland (1992.033)

Summary

Report Abstract:

An archaeological survey on Fort Point at the Naval Electronic Systems Engineering Activity (NESEA), St. Inigoes, Maryland, was conducted because of planned building construction. An archaeological site (18ST325), with Late woodland aboriginal artifacts and historic period artifacts, had been discovered in 1981 at the proposed building location. In addition, Fort Point is the general area of the unlocated circa 1638 St. Inigoes Fort. In order to establish the extent and nature of the archaeological site and to determine the impact of the proposed construction, an intensive archaeological survey was undertaken.

This survey, conducted in the fall of 1982, involved the systematic excavation of shovel tests and detailed analysis of the field results, artifacts recovered, historical documents, oral history, and photographic evidence. Based on oral, archaeological, and photographic evidence, it is apparent that two houses stood on the site, one dating from the second quarter of the 19th century to circa 1920/30 and another from 1920/30 to mid-century. The site is not deemed eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Further evidence of the Late Woodland aboriginal occupation and the 1638 fort were not discovered. It was determined that no significant archaeological resources exist within the area of proposed construction.
