Hunting the Soviet Bear-A Study of Soviet Aircraft Intercepts near Alaska 1961-1991
Summary
This historical study is an account of Alaska's Cold War years. It focuses on the Soviet aircraft intercept activities from 1961 when the first recorded intercept was made, until the end of 1991. The Alaskan NORAD Region, because of its adjacent location to the former Soviet Union, has had more Soviet aircraft intercepts conducted in its area than any other NORAD region. The study, by TSgt William Allen, is based on declassified and unclassified
documents held in the 11th Air Force history office archives. It provides information on each intercept conducted over a thirty year period and a brief background on the tensions that occurred along the ""Ice Curtain"" separating the two nations.
