The People of Casas Grandes: Cranial and Dental Morphology Through Time
Author(s): Barbara H. Butler
Year: 1971
Summary
Casas Grandes offers an unusual opportunity for a physical anthropologist. There is good archaeological control of spatial and temporal distributions of the skeletal populations, and therefore the results of examinations of these skeletons can contribute important data to general studies of micro-evolutionary changes in Homo sapiens. Studies of the genetics of morphological variation and analysis of discontinous traits of skeletons aid in understanding micro-evolutionary change. This project describes and analyses discrete morphological characteristics of the crania and dentitions of the Casas Grandes skeletal populations. In so doing, it documents temporal trends of characteristics of the Casas Grandes people over a time span of 1,000 years. In addition, it examines temporal similarities and differences of dental disease and wear of patterns and briefly describes observed artificial cranial deformation.
