Digital Public Outreach and Education in Underwater Archaeology

Author(s): Kirsten M. Hawley

Summary

This is a forum/panel proposal presented at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Underwater archaeology is often only accessible to those who can snorkel or SCUBA dive. As we move into the age of digital heritage and online conferences, many archaeologists have used a variety of tools to provide wider access to submerged archaeological sites and the information that they hold. These tools have only become more important during the COVID-19 quarantine, as in many places, digital outreach has become the only outreach option. This panel seeks to bring together underwater archaeologists from a variety of backgrounds to discuss and compare methods of virtual outreach and education being used, future initiatives, and ways to engage diverse audiences through these digital means.
