Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Archaeology of Conflict (General Sessions)" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

In 2020, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum was awarded an American Battlefield Protection Program grant through the National Park Service to survey the Revolutionary War battlefield site at Arnold’s Bay. This site is where American troops under General Benedict Arnold burned their remaining fleet to prevent its capture by the British during the last major engagement in the northern theater at the end of the 1776 campaign season. This project aims to define the boundaries of the battlefield site in Arnold's Bay utilizing remote sensing techniques underwater and on land, in collaboration with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community and in partnership with the Advanced Metal Detecting for the Archaeologist program. This paper presents the historic background for this site including past archaeological data from Arnold’s Bay and the adjacent Ferris Homestead. Fieldwork for the underwater and terrestrial survey of the battlefield are scheduled to take place in spring of 2021.
