Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Historical Archaeology in a Digital Age (General Sessions)" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

From 2018 through 2020, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum hosted a number of workshops for local avocational divers to train them in photogrammetry and shipweck documentation. With support from the National Maritime Heritage Grant Program, these workshops trained more than a dozen local divers in the methods of properly scanning wreck sites for the purposes of creating photogrammetry models. These efforts were focused on the shipwrecks included in the Vermont Underwater Historic Preserve System. This presentation will share the details of the multi-year effort and will present some of the models resulting from this collaboration with the local dive community. This collaboration between professional archaeologists and avocational divers involved them in them in the preservation process and instilled a sense of stewardship for the resources they helped to document and preserve.
