Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Landscapes Above and Below in Southern Contexts (General Sessions)" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
The construction of a bathymetric history of the Emanuel Point Shipwreck area, when paired with an examination of Pensacola’s maritime cultural landscape, can provide insight into the effects past maritime activities had on the submerged cultural resources present. Using ArcGIS and bathymetric data derived from navigational charts and coastal surveys, a visual timeline was created and compared to the maritime activities which possessed the potential to alter the bathymetry of the area encompassing the Emanuel Point Shipwreck sites. The goal of this research is to further our understanding of the existing archaeological assemblages and to raise awareness regarding the preservation of submerged cultural resources. As this paper is a portion of a larger research endeavor, it will conclude with a summary of additional and future research on the topic.
