Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Remote Archaeology: Taking Archaeology Online in the Wake of COVID-19" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
The Florida Public Archaeology Network has been working for 15 years to educate the public in Florida about archaeology. COVID-19 presented a unique obstacle to achieving this mission, making it unsafe to meet the public we serve in person for over 6 months. This paper discusses how the Southwest Region of FPAN began weekly Facebook Live videos to continue to teach about the archaeology and history of the area. The abrupt transition required flexibility and rapid adjustment of our outreach strategy, as even topics we cover regularly required re-design and changes to fit the Facebook Live format. This medium has helped us reach further than previously possible and interact with more people than before, including international audiences. However, it is not without its flaws and the region can make more progress in providing equitable outreach based on local population.
