VAFB-2011-05: Rock Art ARPA Compliance 2011

Author(s): Rick Bury; Antoinette Padgett; Dan Reeves

Year: 2011

Summary

This document is the 2011 Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1970 Rock Art Compliance Report. The goals of this project specifically include monitoring of three well-known and regularly visited rock art sites: Honda Ridge (CA-SBA-550), Window Cave (CA-SBA-655) and Swordfish Cave (CA-SBA-503). There are a total of 14 rock art sites that are monitored within Vandenberg Air Force Base boundaries. This report is one component of a continuing effort by the United States Air Force to protect and preserve the unique cultural resources at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Through careful monitoring, no serious impacts or threats to the resources were noted during the period of this contract with the exception of the large exfoliation from Panel 1 at Swordfish Cave, which fortunately did not directly impact any rock art elements. Access and security at the three most visited sites were improved during this time.
