ROI027, Excavations at the William Conner House: A 19th Century Rural Residence in Hamilton County, Indiana

Summary

During the summer of 1990, the Archaeological Resources Management Service, Ball State University, conducted 15 days of archaeological field investigations at the William Conner house, a 19th century homestead in Central Indiana. Fieldwork performed included collection of artifacts from the ground surface, shovel test pit excavation in the house yard, and unit excavation of the house periphery, yard, and cellar. This report presents the results of the investigation. The study was undertaken at the request of the current property owner, Conner Prairie Pioneer Settlement, to help resolve issues pertaining to planned restoration of the William Conner house and, ultimately, to the management of that historic property as an educational resource. No prior archaeological research within the study area is known to have been performed. The site was assigned number 12-H-608 and an archaeological site form was submitted to the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. In this report, the William Conner house is described, and the history of its usage is recounted. The research design, and field, laboratory, and dating methods and techniques are explained. The results of investigation are presented, and conclusions and recommendations for future actions are included.
