Year: 2008

Summary

This document is a report on the Pre-Repatriation Inventory of Human Remains and Associated Materials from Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) Sites, currently curated at the UC Santa Barbara Ossuary. The purpose of this project is to document the collections from VAFB archaeological sites that include human remains, and repatriate them to Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians (SYBCI). As part of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, in 1995, the Repository completed an inventory of human skeletal remains and associated burial objects house at the facility, including those curated on behalf of VAFB. The efforts of this project included: 1) osteological inventory and forensic analysis, 2) scanning and three-dimensional modeling of selected skeletal elements from VAFB collections, 3) inventory of archaeological materials stored with or in association with ossuary collection from VAFB, and 4) preparation for repatriation of these collections for the SYBCI. The Repository submitted the required Notice of Completion of Inventory in November 2007.
