Summary

This report documents the FY16 condition assessments of sites in Zones 10a, 9a, 9b, and 8b (Tables 1, 2, and 3) using the previous systems setup by Applied Earthworks. The zones selected for FY16 were in response to the Canyon Fire of September 2016. The Canyon Fire burnt approximately 12,742 acres on South Base across sites in Zones 10a, 9a, 9b, and 8b (Figure 1-5). The condition of sites within the burn area were assessed for direct and indirect impacts as a result of the fire. CH2M completed Zones 8b. 9a, 9b, and 10a site condition assessments between November 2016 and April 2017. CH2M teams completed field documentation using the Vandenberg Site Condition data dictionary, specific impact data collected from past site condition assessments, and a comprehensive field guide with all pertinent archaeological site details and field reconnaissance maps. In addition, field photography was used to document site overviews, specific impacts, and surrounding area to demonstrate access and vegetation at the time of the site condition assessment. CH2M used methods outlined in the manual (Lebow and Mirro 2009b) and adjustments to the manual (Lebow and Mirro 2009a) to collect and process site condition data. These methods include a Site Condition Geodatabase, Trimble GeoXH GPS, and a data dictionary. The methods outlined in Lebow and Mirro (2009b) and Lebow and Mirro (2009a) are not reiterated in this report except when discussing recommendations to improve current methods.
