Summary

Sample surveys were conducted for the Phoenix District Office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range (BMGAFR) by archaeologists from Desert Archaeology, Inc. Survey was completed in three project areas during field sessions in October and November of 1991. Project sample units included portions of the Crater Range Special Recreation Management Area, Sentinel Plain Lava Flow Special Recreation Management Area, and the proposed Mohawk Mountains and Sand Dunes Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC). Survey sample units included linear transects, contiguous blocks, and judgmental parcels. In total, Approximately 2,260 acres were surveyed.

During survey, 19 prehistoric sites, 1 historic site, and 49 isolated occurrences were documented. Many of the archaeological sites may contain remains making them eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion "D" and 1 site is eligible under Criterion "B" It is recommended that all 20 archaeological sites be allocated to BLM Cultural Use Category "A" on the basis of their potential for scientific use. It is also recommended that Site AZ Z:5:3 (natural arch with artifact scatter) be additionally allocated to Cultural Use Category "E" on the basis of its potential for public use.
