Summary
This report documents joint efforts undertaken by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and Escondida Research Group (ERG) to evaluate the extent of mechanical damages to archaeological site LA 53672 (USFS No. AR-03-03-05-358) and to provide suggestions for stabilization of the damaged portions of the site.
During the summer of 1999, while preparing to replace some powerline poles in Arroyo del Coyote, a heavy equipment operator inadvertently penetrated and disturbed portions of the surface and edge of the terrace on which site LA 53672 is located. The mechanical disturbance uncovered numerous cultural artifacts which Escondida Research Group (ERG) subsequently determined to be part of an eastern and previously undocumented portion of the site. After the mechanical damage, the site was left vulnerable to loss of scientific data from erosion. Accordingly, the work documented in this report represents the first steps toward stabilization to ensure that no additional erosion in that area can occur. The report includes the results of a new site inventory, an evaluation of the damages at the site, and some suggestions concerning methods of stabilization. Before any course of action is taken to stabilize the site, the methods of stabilization will be evaluated by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Department of Energy personnel in consultation with the Cibola National Forest and the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO). Inventory Standards and Accounting Form included.
