Part of the Kirtland Air Force Base Project Metadata project
Author(s): Jeffrey L. Fredine; Robert Wick
Year: 1998
Summary
Archaeologists with Lone Mountain Archaeological Services, Inc. conducted a Class III Cultural Resource Survey on November 23 and 24, 1997, and April 20 through May 18, 1998 for the Cibola National Forest (NMCRIS # 60888). The survey was conducted as part of a proposed prescribed burn. This project area consists of two blocks within the Sandia Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest and totals 2,070 acres.
Twenty-seven sites and 82 isolated occurrences were recorded during the survey. Twenty-one of the sites are newly discovered and recorded; of these, 17 are recommended as eligible to the National Register of Historic Places, and four are recommended as not eligible. Six previously recorded sites were revisited during the survey; of these, four are recommended as eligible to the National Register and two are recommended as not eligible.
Generally, the fire should not burn or significantly change the appearance or spatial arrangement of the lithic, ceramic, or metal artifacts. Sites with obsidian could be impacted if the fire is excessively hot. The fire will have a negative effect on prehistoric thermal features, pictographs, and wooden structures. For this reason, avoidance of LA 108122 (AR-03-03-05-349) and LA 114781 (AR-03-03-05-361) is recommended. Additional avoidance measures may be suggested by the Forest Service for sites with obsidian. Further, avoidance of ground disturbing activities and limitation of vehicle traffic to existing two-track roads is recommended for LA 77134 (AR-03-03-05-169), LA 108122 (AR-03-03-05-349), LA 121931 (AR-03-03-05-424), LA 121932 (AR-03-03-05-425), and LA 121933 (AR-03-03-05-426). No further treatment is recommended for the remaining sites. Providing that these stipulations are followed, clearance for the proposed project is recommended.
