Summary

An archaeological survey of approximately 9. 5 acres of property situated within Area I, Sandia National Laboratories, Kirtland Air Force Base, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, yielded no cultural resources. The area surveyed is located on the western piedmont of the Manzano Mountains, south of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The survey was conducted for a new fill area site and associated haul route. Remains of a partially dismantled and fairly deteriorated centrifuge facility site is located within the locale scheduled for establishment of the fill area. This facility does not appear to be historically significant due to its state of disrepair and to its apparent lack of sufficient antiquity. As the associated artifacts and remains of this previous facility were the only cultural material items observed, it is felt that no significant artifacts or cultural features will be effected by this proposed undertaking.

The northern portion of the haul road is situated within an area previously inventoried during the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Explosive Components Facility site survey (Hoagland 1989). No significant cultural resources were located during the previous survey and cultural resource clearance was recommended for the proposed facility site. Cultural resource clearance is, therefore, recommended for establishment of the new fill area site and its associated haul route as no significant cultural resources will be effected by these proposed undertakings.
