Cultural Resources Survey Of 6.4 Acres for Sandia National Laboratories Video Technology Laboratory Facility, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico

Summary

An archaeological survey of approximately 6.4 acres of property situated within Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), Bernalillo County, New Mexico, yielded no significant cultural resources. The survey was conducted antecedent to continued use of Sandia National Laboratories Video Technology Laboratory (VTL) Facility.

The permit area has been extensively disturbed by previous construction and use of the area over the past several years. Primarily due to this previous disturbance and the fact that much of the area is situated within a valley flood plain, no significant cultural resource sites were located. The results of this survey concurs with a previous cultural resource inventory conducted for Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) Management Area A, which included the southern portion of this proposed permit area. No significant archaeological sites or isolated occurrences were located within the previously surveyed portion of the Video Technology Laboratory (VTL) Facility.

The current inventory resulted in the recordation of one isolated occurrence. It was a petrified wood uniface situated within the flood plain portion of the survey area. This lithic tool could potentially be affected by activities conducted within the use permit area. However, due to assumed lack of associated subsurface deposits and the recordation of the artifact, it is the opinion of the author that the isolated occurrence is no longer potentially significant. Clearance is recommended.
