Summary
Historic land use of what became Kirtland Air Force Base can be studied through archaeological, documentary, and oral historical records. In 1993, TRC Mariah Associates Inc., interviewed persons who had either lived on land that became part of Kirtland Air Force Base or had a long association with the area and had first hand knowledge of how the land was used and how people made a living. Informants were taken to the Coyote Springs area, a place near which some had lived before World War II. Many remembered the homesteaders who occupied the area in the 1920s and 1930s. Topics discussed include how their families came to live in the region; who the people were; what they did, especially farming, mining, and ranching; the use of Coyote Springs for water and recreation; aspects of life, including transportation, connections to Albuquerque, houses and homesteads, education, and cooperation and conflict among residents; and, finally, how their families left their homes. This document presents an abridged version of the oral histories arranged by topic.
