Archaeological Survey of an Observatory Site, Associated Road and Distribution Line on Mount Washington in Bernalillo County, New Mexico
Summary
The Office of Contract Archeology, University of New Mexico, conducted an inventory for cultural resources for Rockwell International Corporation, Albuquerque. The survey was requested to inventory an approximate 20 acre parcel and an associated 5.8 mile corridor on withdrawal lands under the jurisdiction of the United State Forest Service and Kirtland Air Force Base. A total of 160.60 acres of land south of Albuquerque, in Bernalillo County was inventoried.
Two archeological sites, two current cultural manifestations, and nine isolated artifacts were recorded. The sites (OCA 391-1 and OCA 391-2) consist of two lithic scatters which are considered potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The current cultural manifestations consist of an observation tower (CCM 1) and 3 modern shelters (CCM 2) which have been constructed in the past 50 years and therefore do not qualify for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The documentation of the isolated artifacts in the field has realized their full research potential.
Avoidance of the sites is the preferred alternative. If avoidance is not possible it is recommended that a treatment plan be developed for the resources in consultation with the land administering agency, Rockwell International Corporation, and Office of Contract Archaeology.
