Part of the Kirtland Air Force Base Project Metadata project

Summary
This report documents the results of a Class II Cultural Resources Inventory of the Mesa del Sol property which lies south of Albuquerque and the Tijeras Arroyo, and is held in trust for the University of New Mexico by the State. A total of 2346 acres was surveyed in 14 120 m wide transects, and represents a 20 percent sample of the total of approximately 11,500 acres which comprises the property.
A total of 32 archeological sites was documented in the course of the survey. The sites and components recorded range from early Archaic to Pueblo IV in age and total 19 lithic unknown, 10 Archaic, 5 Anasazi, and 6 historic Anglo components. Altogether, 212 lithic artifacts, 2 ceramics, and numerous pieces of fire-cracked rock were documented at the prehistoric sites. Numerous historic artifacts were recorded at the two historic sites. In addition, 103 isolated occurrences were documented, representing 205 lithic artifacts, 1 prehistoric sherd, 5 locations with historic materials, and 25 fire-cracked rocks.
Recommendations are made for future research and management: (a) performance of a Class III inventory which completes the sample survey and includes collection of isolated occurrences and systematic lithic raw material data, (b) archival research to document the mesa's known history, (c) ethnographic research to document current and/or recent native-American use of the mesa, (d) extensive obsidian hydration studies, including specialized temperature and moisture measurements to establish local hydration rate parameters, (e) a geomorphology study, and (e) monitoring of future development activities and construction.
