Summary

Mariah Associates, Inc. completed a Class III Cultural Resource Inventory for a gravel quarry located on Kirtland Air Force Base, Bernalillo County, New Mexico. The survey was requested by Wayne Frasier of Mountain States Constructors, Inc. The project encompassed an 18.5 acre area for the quarry and related facilities, and a surrounding buffer zone of 35.5 acres for future expansion. In all, approximately 54 acres were surveyed.

Ten isolated occurrences and a single archaeological site were recorded. The site, LA 48098, was originally recorded by the Center for Anthropological Studies in 1979. This prehistoric lithic scatter has been reidentified and rerecorded by Mariah and is recommended as potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion d. Avoidance of this potentially significant cultural resource is recommended. To ensure avoidance, construction of a protection fence around the site is recommended. If avoidance of LA 48098 is not feasible, an archaeological testing program to determine the eligibility of the site is recommended prior to ground disturbing activities.

The data potential of the isolated occurrences is considered to have been completely recorded during survey and clearance for the remainder of the quarry location is recommended.
