Summary
Properties at Kirtland Air Force Base that are being affected by the CV-22 program were evaluated using the National Register of Historic Places criteria for eligibility, appropriate historic contexts, drawings, photographs and site visits. An earlier report, National Register of Historic Places Eligibility Evaluation of Hangers 481 and 482, evaluated two aircraft hangars (also being used by the CV- 22 program) under a World War II context. This current evaluation includes properties that may be eligible under a Cold War context.
Of the eight properties that were evaluated in this report, three were not considered exceptionally important under a Cold War theme and one was constructed after the period of significance (1945-1989). Three structures were constructed as B-36 and B-52 aircraft maintenance hangars and two buildings housed flight simulator bays for the C-130 fixed wing aircraft and H-3/H-53 helicopters. The hangars were associated with the Cold War theme of research and development through the KAFB role of testing nuclear weapons capabilities of the B-36 and B-52. The buildings with flight simulator bays were associated with the Cold War air mobility and training themes through the training that took place for the mobility aircraft (C-130, H-3 and H-53).
Hangars 1000, 1001, and 1002 retain a high degree of architectural integrity, which allows the structures to convey their significance and association with the Cold War research and development theme and as such should be considered potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
Buildings 955 and 956 house aircraft flight simulator bays that retain architectural integrity that allows the bays to convey their role as flight training spaces. These bays are also associated with the Cold War themes of air mobility and training, and as such should be considered potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
