Archaeological Survey for Three Areas for the Sandia National Laboratory Sled Track Project, Bernalillo County, New Mexico

Summary

A cultural resources inventory was recently conducted for Sandia National Laboratories' Sled Track Project on approximately 370 ha (925 acres) of Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) property, Bernalillo County, New Mexico. This cultural resources survey yielded one archaeological site (LA 89044), which appears to be a historic check dam, and 10 isolated occurrences (IOs). Nine of the IOs consist of historic and/or prehistoric chipped stone items, and the other is a sherd from a prehistoric ceramic bowl. All of these items appear to represent isolated activities. There was no evidence to suggest subsurface remains with Site LA 89044 nor the recorded isolated occurrences. Therefore, Site LA 89044 and Isolated Occurrences 1 through 10 do not appear to be eligible for inclusion onto the National Register of Historic Places under criterion (d).

Also, based on this current survey and previous archaeological inventories in these areas, it appears that there are no potentially significant cultural resources located within the North or South Thunder Ranges, the Tech Area Ill Rocket Sled Track Extension, or within the sample survey area.
