Summary
The following Cultural Resources Overview and Regulatory Assessment was prepared by TRC Mariah Associates, Inc. under contract to Duke Engineering & Services, Inc. for Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNL/NM) in September, 1996. The primary purposes of this document are to aid in the identification and protection of significant cultural resources, identify and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, and guide future planning. This document updates information provided in the original report produced by Chambers Group Inc. in 1992. Based on compliance surveys undertaken in 1990 and 1991, that document concluded that no significant cultural resources were located on Department of Energy owned land occupied by Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNL/NM). Since the preparation of the original report, new cultural resources data have been collected, and there have been changes in the regulatory environment. This report incorporates the new site specific data and addresses changes in management requirements. Based on new cultural resources data, potentially significant historic properties related to the Cold War have been recorded on Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNL/NM) occupied land. Other significant prehistoric and historic archaeological sites have been identified on lands owned by other federal agencies that are used by Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNL/NM) under use permits. Between May, 1991 to August, 1996, however, no Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNL/NM) undertaking has resulted in a determination of adverse effect.
