Impacts of Climate Change on Marginal Communities in the Archaeological Record

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Beyond the Shoreline: Heritage at Risk at Inland Sites" , at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

This paper explores the relationship between historical conditions of inequality in the archaeological record and climate-induced coastal erosion in the Southeast and Middle Atlantic regions. Recent studies have demonstrated that a significant number of archaeological sites will be affected by rising sea levels and coastal erosion in the near future. The purpose of this paper will be to denote the disproportional effect these climatic changes will have on historical archaeological sites associated with underrepresented communities. The effects of this erasure are not limited to the past, but rather, have significant and lasting implications for descendant communities.
