Summary
This is a poster submission presented at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
Historic Bartram’s Garden, located in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Southwest Philadelphia, has a rich and multilayered history that reaches back into the distant past. Over the past decade AECOM – on behalf of the City of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and John Bartram Association – has undertaken several archaeological projects on this property. These projects range from simple surveys to Phase II investigations, and the materials unearthed cover the span of occupation on the site, ranging from roughly 3000 BCE to the present day. This poster presents and discusses the four major archaeological projects conducted by AECOM on or in relation to the Bartram’s Garden property – South Meadow, Carr Garden, Eastwick Mansion/Bartram Hall, and Bartram’s Mile Trail Extension. The archaeological material uncovered from these investigations was extensive and contributed to the continued preservation and understanding of this extremely important site within the City of Philadelphia.
