Archaeological Investigations to Locate the Site of the 1876 Centennial Japanese Bazaar

Summary

This is a poster submission presented at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

In 2015 and 2016 AECOM conducted archaeological investigations at the site of the Centennial Exposition Japanese Bazaar in West Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. These investigations both revealed the presence of intact features associated with the 1876 Japanese Bazaar structure and recovered artifacts associated with the operation of the bazaar during the exhibition. The bazaar was sponsored by the Japanese government and functioned as a chiefly mercantile exchange or shop, selling souvenirs to fair visitors. The excavations conducted at the site provided valuable information about the spatial patterning of this exhibition site, while also producing a sampling of diagnostic material for interpreting the cultural landscape.
