An Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Construction Area of the Aero propulsion Systems Testing Facility, Arnold Engineering and Development Center, Coffee County, Tennessee

Author(s): James E. Cobb

Year: 1977

Summary

An archaeological survey of a proposed 120-acre construction site on the Barrens Plateau was undertaken at the U.S. Air Force, Arnold Engineering and Development Center near Tullahoma, Tennessee, on September 7, 1977. This area is considered highly relevant for interpretation of previous and current research designs in the area. Approximately 60 percent of the area delineated for surveying was closely observed and/or shovel tested for evidence of prehistoric activity. Though this survey recovered no evidence of prehistoric archaeological activity, the area is important to current research on the Barrens Plateau. It is thus recommended the area be closely observed following any initial ground disturbance and periodically as top soil is removed.
