Summary
From July 7 to August 11, 1994, archaeologists from the Transportation Center at The University of Tennessee-Knoxville conducted a Phase I archaeological reconnaissance survey for cultural resources of selected areas within the former Camp Forrest training base in Coffee and Franklin counties, Tennessee. The locations examined were limited primarily to long narrow corridors along roads. Work included a pedestrian walk-over of all areas and shovel testing at 30m and 15m intervals. A total of 1,160 shovel tests were excavated, 36 of which contained either Native American or Historic Period cultural remains. Excavated matrix from these tests was screened using 0.25-inch hardware cloth. Five sites (40CF239, 40CF240, 40CF241, 40FR199, and 40FR200) were identified during the survey. The proposed hazardous waste remediation activities in the Camp Forrest area by HAZWRAP will not affect these sites. No further archaeological investigations at these sites are recommended at this time. If future remediation or construction activities are proposed at these sites, then archaeological testing would be necessary to determine if the sites are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
